The Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Screen Printing

By Michael Reed

Screen printing is one of the most commonly used technologies today. This process would include squeezing a blade into a printing paste through the opening of the screen onto a fabric. This process can be used on various types of medium such as on paper boards, fabrics, papers, metals, glass, cotton, plastic, and nylon. And the most common products that can be produced out from these materials are labels, textiles, electronic boards, posters, and signages.

Advantages. It is long lasting. Both the ink thickness ans the disadvantages being considered be as making reasons for Maryland screen printing process durable. And thus, making a design for an item by this method can seriously withstand with so much stresses. So this would be a lot better than those others without losing the quality of prints.

Big orders friendly. Due to screen fabrication which is required in this method for each color used in a particular artwork, this could be best reserved for some large orders. So the more garments will be placed in orders, the cheaper will be the cost of each unit. Great finish. Vibrant colors will be produced and these could be hard to replicate using other techniques.

More ink. With this process, you can be allowed of having greater ink thickness rather than other methods. And this will surely result to having bigger possibilities that a perfectly made piece can be done. Versatility. Screen method for printing is a very versatile technique and you can surely find it hard to look for other methods with an equal level of versatility as this. Example of surfaces used include flat, fabric, metal, plastic, and wood.

Straightforward. Regardless of the changes in the operations, either doing it by hand or automatically through a machine, processes are still the same. Another advantage is replacing the tools easily. These are not considered as obsolete tools like what other technologies are.

Disadvantages. Not recommended for smaller orders. As being mentioned above, this printing process will need a lot of preparations compared to the other techniques before the production. And thus, not considering it as a suitable process for an on demand printing. On demand means creating the item right after the order has been made.

More colors means higher costs. It is a bit hassle to create one screen for each of the colors. And thus, saying that colorful designs could be very complicated, which makes the item become more expensive. So the best suggestion to this is keeping the design simple with fewer tones but with so much of attractiveness.

Not environmentally friendly. Even though a lot of organizations already have been trying to create eco friendly inks and screens, there is still a waste of water in reality. The reason is because an ink is mixed with water during production and is used as well to clean the screens. This problem will surely be hard to stop because thousands of productions have been made each day.

Relative complexity. This may sound similar to a contradiction. However, the method might be quite complex but it depends upon the project and design. It is because it involves much more steps than the other methods.
